PLANNING: HOT SEATING

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT - ALICE AND EMILY

We created our hot seating as it is a way for our actors to really dive into their characters personal life as they are asked questions about their family, personality and home life. We filmed our Hot seating with the Canon 370 and we used a tripod to help steady the camera which also let us manipulate the tripod so we could explore loads of different angles.

We wanted to make our hot seating set in a therapy room so in order to make this look as real as possible we used a black curtain behind the characters and placed a table in between the character who was talking and the therapist who was asking the questions.

In order to get to know Emily and Alice better, Charlie asks lots of specific questions regarding their family, the dynamic of their family, the bond between each other and their own personalities.

Emily is presented as a very calm individual who doesn't try very hard to please her family yet she she is still the favourite. We wanted her to be on her phone during her talk with the therapist to portray the idea that she doesn't take it seriously.

Alice is presented as a very energetic, optimistic, positive girl. She always finds the positives out of everything and desperately wants to please her parents. To show her energetic, and bubbly side, she used small and quick movements like fidgeting in her hot seating. However, this is all just an act in a way. She almost is seen as trying to hard and deep down she is lonely.

  1. I was impressed by your work here as the actor had been really well prepared to respond in role. You have discussed the part that she plays in the film thoroughly and this activity has certainly enable your actor to inhabit the role convincingly. You may be able to find a place for this or part of it on your film website, your film Twitter feed or film FB page. It is smoothly filmed and edited.
You have also brought out the contrasts between Alice and Emily, showing the hidden tensions in the family. The cross-cutting between the two sisters exposes the pretences, 'faces' and unhappinesses. This is an extensive piece of character investigation.
